4 Days in Rome, The Eternal City

by Mark Penaroza, Director of Client Accounts & Programs

Rome. The name itself conjures images of ancient gladiators, majestic ruins, and delicious pasta. It’s a city steeped in history, art, and culture, a place where every corner whispers stories of emperors, artists, and revolutionaries. I recently had the privilege of experiencing the magic of Rome and I’m here to share my tips for making the most of your Roman adventure. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to uncover new layers of its charm, here’s how to experience the best of Rome in just four unforgettable days.

Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Ancient Rome

Kick off your Roman adventure with a deep dive into the city’s legendary past.

Morning: Colosseum & Roman Forum

  • No trip to Rome is complete without visiting the Colosseum, the grand amphitheater where gladiators clashed, and crowds roared.
    • Pro Tip: Pre-book your tickets online to skip the lines, and opt for a guided tour to uncover fascinating stories behind this architectural marvel.
  • Combine your visit with a stroll through the Roman Forum, the heart of ancient Roman life, where you can wander among the ruins of temples, basilicas, and government buildings.
    • Pro Tip: Return in the evening for a quiet, golden-lit stroll that feels like stepping back in time.

Afternoon: Capitoline Hill & Piazza Venezia

  • Head up Capitoline Hill, one of Rome’s legendary seven hills, offering stunning views over the Forum. Stop by the Capitoline Museums for a closer look at ancient sculptures, including the famous statue of Marcus Aurelius.
  • At the base of the hill, the grand Piazza Venezia is a striking central hub, home to the towering Altare della Patria, also known as the “Wedding Cake” monument.
  • Grab a slice of pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) for a quick and delicious lunch. There are countless pizzerias throughout the city, so you’re sure to find one (or many) that you love.

Evening: Aperitivo & Dinner in Trastevere

  • Cross the Tiber River to Trastevere, a charming neighborhood known for its artisan shops, lively streets, and authentic Roman cuisine. It’s a great place to experience the authentic Roman vibe.
  • Embrace the Italian tradition of aperitivo, a pre-dinner drink and snacks, at a local bar. It’s a great way to relax and soak up the atmosphere. My favorite pre-dinner drinks are a refreshing Aperol or Campari Spritz. Then dine at a traditional trattoria like Da Enzo al 29, famous for its Cacio e Pepe and Carbonara.

Day 2: Vatican City & Baroque Rome

Prepare for an awe-inspiring journey through the world’s smallest country, Vatican City.

Morning: St. Peter’s Basilica & Vatican Museums

  • Start early at St. Peter’s Basilica, a breathtaking masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Climb to the dome for panoramic city views before heading to the Vatican Museums, housing an unparalleled collection of art and artifacts, including the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s awe-inspiring frescoes.
    • Pro Tip: Be prepared to walk (a lot) and for crowds, especially during peak season.

Afternoon: Castel Sant’Angelo & Piazza Navona

  • After leaving Vatican City, walk along the Tiber River to Castel Sant’Angelo, a fortress with fascinating history and stunning terrace views.
  • Next, stroll over to Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares, featuring the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini.
  • Treat yourself to a scoop (or two!) of gelato from Giolitti. Located near the Pantheon, Giolitti is one of Rome’s oldest and most famous gelaterias, with over 100 mouthwatering flavors. But don’t take my word for it, Rome has around 2,000 gelaterias, giving you ample opportunity to explore and find your favorite gelato.

Evening: Dinner Near the Pantheon

  • Wrap up your day at a restaurant near the Pantheon, such as Armando al Pantheon, known for its classic Roman dishes.
  • After dinner, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, ensuring your return to Rome, according to legend. This is a popular spot for photos and coin-tossing, so be prepared for crowds no matter the time of day or night that you visit.
    • Fun Fact: Every day, visitors toss approximately €3,000 into the Trevi Fountain, adding up to an astonishing €1.5 million annually!

Day 3: Hidden Gems & Local Experiences

Morning: Borghese Gallery & Gardens

  • Escape the hustle and bustle of the city with a visit to the Borghese Gallery, housing masterpieces by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Raphael. Wander through the lush Borghese Gardens, a perfect place to recharge before another adventure-filled day.
    • Pro Tip: Reservations are required.

Afternoon: Testaccio & Food Tour

  • Venture into Testaccio, a neighborhood known for its authentic Roman cuisine. Take a food tour to sample supplì (fried rice balls), porchetta sandwiches, and local market specialties.
  • For a hands-on experience, consider a cooking class where you’ll learn to make fresh pasta or traditional Roman dishes.

Evening: Rooftop Drinks & Sunset Views

  • Cap off your day with rooftop cocktails at Terrazza Borromini, overlooking Piazza Navona, or at Hotel Raphael’s rooftop, where you can sip a Campari Spritz with views of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Day 4: Shopping & Farewell to Rome

Morning: Spanish Steps & Designer Boutiques

  • Start your final day at the Spanish Steps, an iconic meeting point and a great place to people-watch.
  • Nearby, explore Via dei Condotti, Rome’s luxury shopping street, or Via del Corso, home to a mix of high-end and local boutiques.
    • Pro Tip: To experience the Spanish Steps with fewer crowds, I recommend going early in the morning.

Afternoon: Campo de’ Fiori & Local Markets

  • Wander through Campo de’ Fiori, a vibrant market square, perfect for picking up local cheeses, olive oil, and handmade pasta to bring a taste of Rome home.

Evening: Farewell Dinner in the Jewish Ghetto

  • End your Roman journey with dinner in the Jewish Ghetto, one of the city’s oldest and most historic districts. Try Carciofi alla Giudia (Jewish-style fried artichokes) at Nonna Betta or Ba’Ghetto, and savor one last plate of pasta before saying arrivederci to Rome.

More Pro Tips!

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking!
  • Learn a Few Basic Italian Phrases: While many people speak English, a little effort goes a long way.
  • Be Prepared for Crowds: Rome is a popular tourist destination, especially during peak season.
  • Book Accommodations and Tours in Advance: This is especially important for popular attractions and during busy periods. Tickets for popular tours/attractions such as the Vatican Museums (which includes the stunning Sistine Chapel), as well as the Colosseum, book quickly, so don’t plan to see these on a whim.
