by Julie Keaton, SHW VP of Engagement

Strategic, collaborative, and energized by creative problem-solving, Markelle Fuegmann brings a dynamic blend of experience and passion to her role at SHW. With a career rooted in events and marketing, she’s carved out a niche that bridges strategy and execution, acting as the vital link between sales and operations. Whether she’s mapping out multi-city programs or sourcing standout venues, Markelle approaches every project with precision, heart, and an eye for bringing a client’s vision to life. In this spotlight, we caught up with her to learn more about her journey, her favorite Seattle spots, and the one tip she swears by for event planning success.

Q: What brought you to SHW, and how has your career evolved since you started?

A: After gaining valuable experience over the past decade, I was eager to join a team that fosters a positive and healthy office culture. SHW’s reputation for excellent business practices and multiple industry awards really stood out to me. It’s been incredibly refreshing to work for a company that genuinely prioritizes and cares about its employees.

Q: Can you share a bit about your background before joining SHW?

A: My first role after graduate school was as the Assistant Tournament Director for the University of Washington Athletic Department, where I helped coordinate major NCAA events hosted in Seattle, including March Madness and the Volleyball Final Four. In 2016, after planning my own wedding and unexpectedly loving the process, I reached out to the catering company we had hired to inquire about opportunities. That led to a five-year role as an Event Sales Manager, where I honed my skills in event planning and client service. Before joining SHW, I worked for another large event firm, starting in venue sales and eventually transitioning into a marketing role.

Q: What does your current role entail, and what do you enjoy most about it?

A: I often describe my current role as “the glue between sales and operations”—bringing together strategy, execution, and collaboration. When I first came across the job description, I remember thinking, “Wow, this is the first role I’ve seen that feels like it was made for me.” It perfectly aligned with both my strengths and background. It brings together my skills in sales, operations, and creative problem-solving. Our incredible sales team manages all incoming client requests and passes them along to me. From there, I handle vendor outreach, assemble detailed estimates, and create visual presentations to bring the concept to life. Once the client confirms their booking, I transition all the details to our operations team to ensure a smooth and seamless handoff.

Q: What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on recently?

A: I’ve always loved researching new destinations (I’m the travel planner in our family), so while I truly enjoy developing Seattle-based events, I get especially excited about programs that take us to other cities like Portland, OR or Austin, TX. I find a lot of joy in discovering the perfect venue that aligns with a client’s vision and bringing it to life by painting an exciting picture for them. I recently supported an event in Austin for Fiji Airways, and it was such a fun experience sourcing the perfect vendors to match the vibrant personality of the brand, from stylish lounge furniture to tropical plant installations.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about working at SHW?

A: I feel incredibly lucky to work alongside such amazing colleagues; people who are genuinely passionate about what they do, always willing to lend a hand, and deeply committed to both our clients and the mission of SHW. Our leadership team has done a stellar job cultivating a dedicated, collaborative, and supportive team environment. As a mother of two young children, I also truly value the flexibility and support SHW offers in balancing work and family life.

Q: What’s your favorite Seattle experience?

A: My husband and I are avid brewery enthusiasts, and one of our favorite spots in the city is Gasworks Brewing. Located right on the water of North Lake Union, you can even paddleboard up and tie your board to their dock. It’s a fantastic place to enjoy lunch while watching floatplanes take off and land. The spot has lots of seating and also allows both dogs and kids!

Q: Any hobbies or interests outside of work that inspire you?

A: I recently got into running and have enjoyed participating in races all over the Pacific Northwest, from Snohomish, WA to Bend, OR. I also love traveling and immersing myself in new cities and cultures!

Q: What’s your #1 tip for event planners?

A: I believe that having a detailed event plan is essential when managing large programs, but the real key is being ready for anything. Events are inherently unpredictable, so the ability to think quickly, problem-solve on the fly, and remain calm under pressure is crucial to success.
