Employee Spotlight
Q&A with Terra Johnson, Sr. Program & Event Manager
by Julie Keaton, SHW VP of Engagement
At SHW, the Docksider of the Year award recognizes someone who consistently lives our values, elevates our work, and makes a lasting impact on both clients and teammates. In 2025, that honor went to Terra Johnson. As a Sr. Program & Event Manager, Terra brings equal parts precision and creativity to every program she touches. Known for her thoughtful leadership, collaborative spirit, and ability to turn complex projects into meaningful experiences, she exemplifies what it means to be a Docksider.
In this employee spotlight, Terra shares her journey to SHW, the projects that inspire her most, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.
Q: What brought you to SHW, and how has your career evolved since you started?
A: I was referred to the recruiter for SHW by a friend of a friend. Once I was told who the company was and went through the interview process, I knew SHW is where I wanted to be. I’m working with the best of the best and have learned so much over the past three years.
Q: Can you share a bit about your background before joining SHW?
A: Prior to come to SHW, I worked for Cedarbrook Lodge as a food and beverage manager for a year and then for the next 4 years, I worked in the Sales department focusing on social events and helping to build their wedding business. After Cedarbrook, I worked for Slalom Consulting planning internal conferences and retreats.
Q: What does your current role entail, and what do you enjoy most about it?
A: My role as Sr. Program and Event Manager is mainly project management with the ability to also do what I love and create memorable moments for our clients.
Q: What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on recently?
A: I’ve had the opportunity to work on so many projects in my three years, but I would have to say that partnering for Alaska Airlines on their internal events as it gives me the opportunity to do what I love most and that is to dip into the creative with décor, entertainment and production management. There’s so much joy in seeing the faces of the attendees.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about working at SHW?
A: Without a doubt—the people. The level of talent at SHW is incredible, and everyone brings something unique to the team. It’s inspiring to work alongside people who are not only skilled but genuinely supportive of one another.
Q: What’s your favorite Seattle experience?
A: Seattle summers are my favorite. The water, the natural beauty, the long days, it never gets old. Any chance I get, I’m near the water or out on it.
Q: Any hobbies or interests outside of work that inspire you?
A: Music is a big source of inspiration for me. I love to sing and dance, and I’ve spent a few years learning Salsa, Bachata, and West Coast Swing. It’s creative, energizing, and a great way to reset outside of work.
Q: What’s your #1 tip for event planners?
A: Listen to your people, especially those on the ground. Some of my biggest lessons have come from our seasonal, part-time Event Staff. When you empower them to step into roles that fit their strengths and make sure they feel genuinely valued, everything runs better, from execution to morale.
