SHW’s Tops 10 Industry Predictions for 2025
With No Regurgitated Buzzwords
by Brett Robertson, CEO
We know the drill, every year a slew of “industry insiders” churn out the same tired predictions about what’s going to happen in events. AI will save the day! Sustainability is the future! This year will be different! And while we love a good cliché as much as anyone, we’re here to cut through the noise. So, without further ado, here’s what we really think will happen in 2025. It’s sarcastic, a little snarky, and dare we say… accurate?
1. AI: The “All the Rage” Not-So-Rage Revolution
Is there a single event list without AI at the top? (We’re asking for a friend.) AI is everyone’s favorite buzzword, but will it transform the event industry overnight in 2025? Sorry, not really. Sure, planners will lean on AI for researching shiny new destinations and maybe even crank out a few blog posts or marketing blurbs when deadlines loom (we see you, tired copywriters). We’ll see support bots become accessible to smaller events and organizations, and that’s cute. But as for AI taking over massive event workstreams or replacing the human magic behind it all? Hard pass—for now. Ask us again in 2026, though; you never know. And if you’re wondering if AI wrote this list? We’ll never tell!
2. Sustainability: Slow and Steady (and Slow… and Steady)
Ah, sustainability—the golden child of industry predictions since, well, forever. We’ve been on this train since the British Standard BS 8901:2007, later codified internationally in ISO 20121 in 2012. You know, back when flip phones were a thing. While event planners have done their part (or at least tried), the march towards true sustainability has been, shall we say, glacial? Sure, there’ll be incremental improvements in 2025, but don’t hold your breath for a “carbon-neutral everything” revolution just yet. We’re moving forward—just at a snail’s pace. Because why rush when we can take the scenic route?
3. Planning Timelines: Sanity Returns!
Raise your glass—reasonable planning timelines are back! After a couple of years scrambling through last-minute programs and tight turnarounds that made our hearts race (in the worst way), 2025 is bringing some relief. Planning periods will be more extended, giving planners enough time to, you know, plan. It’s like discovering there’s actually a full pot of coffee waiting for you in the morning. So take a breath; 2025 is here to normalize the chaos.
4. Budgets Will Go Up—Because They Have To
We know what you’re thinking: “Budgets going up? In this economy?” But hear us out. Over the past couple of years, we’ve all watched budgets stay frustratingly flat while inflation skyrocketed. And let’s be honest, nobody wants to attend a “budget-friendly” conference where the coffee tastes like cardboard and the decor consists of leftover holiday tinsel. Organizations will finally cough up more money for events in 2025 because they have no choice but to keep up with reality. So, dust off those creative pitch decks and bring on the caviar dreams (or at least better coffee).
5. Personalization: Hello, Individual Experiences!
Gone are the days of simply grouping attendees by age or gender demographics and calling it a day. In 2025, personalization is taking a giant leap forward. Attendee experiences will be custom-crafted for the individual, driven by data insights, preferences, and behaviors. Want a curated food menu based on your allergies and favorite cuisines? Check. Prefer networking only with people in the same career stage as you? Done. Welcome to a world where your event journey is just as unique as your Netflix recommendations (minus the questionable algorithmic misfires).
6. Tech: Personalized and Powerful (and Consolidating, Too)
Now that we’ve left the pandemic-driven ramp-up with hybrid and virtual events behind, 2025 is all about making tech work for you, the individual attendee. We’re talking about tech that complements the drive for personalization—like mobile apps that know your favorite topics, recommend sessions tailored just for you, and even help you connect with attendees you’d actually want to meet. From personalized registration processes that greet you by name and remember your preferences, to interactive tech that suggest experiences based on your unique event journey, the tech of 2025 is here to make your experience seamless, engaging, and all about you. But it’s not all innovation and shiny gadgets—expect to see the continued consolidation of event tech companies. More mergers, more buyouts, and yes, a few closures. The strongest and most adaptable tech solutions will thrive, meaning the tools at your disposal will likely be more powerful and streamlined than ever before.
7. Alcohol is Dead, Long Live Alcohol
Younger generations are cutting back on booze, and the data proves it. According to Gallup, Gen Z is drinking less than previous generations did at the same age. So, what does this mean for event planners in 2025? We’ll need to cater to our teetotaling Gen Z attendees with non-alcoholic options that don’t suck—think craft mocktails, zero-proof bars, and kombucha on tap. But before you toss the champagne entirely, remember our Boomers and Gen X/Ys, who still appreciate a good drink (or three). Long live the balancing act of serving up everything from artisanal mocktails to top-shelf whiskey—cheers to meeting everyone’s tastes!
8. Unless It’s a Taylor Swift Concert, Last-Minute Sign-Ups Are Here to Stay
Remember the days when attendees and sponsors would sign up early? Yeah, neither do we. In 2025, expect a continued trend of last-minute signups. Unless it’s a Taylor Swift concert (because let’s be real, Swifties don’t mess around), people are getting comfortable with holding out until the last possible moment. And you know what? Planners just have to roll with it. Flexible registration processes and just-in-time logistics are the new reality. Breathe in, breathe out, and embrace the chaos.
9. Event Planning Teams Get Their Groove Back
The pandemic hit event teams hard, creating a brain drain that left many organizations scrambling. But in 2025, we’re finally seeing a return to normalcy with well-staffed, mature planning teams who are ready to tackle any challenge. The industry is attracting and retaining talent again, which means better events, better experiences, and fewer sleepless nights.
10. Events: Still the #1 Connection Tool
Despite all the shiny tech, AI hype, and evolving trends, some things don’t change. Events remain the #1 way for organizations to connect with clients and their own teams. In 2025, they’ll be more important than ever before, driving engagement, loyalty, and a whole lot of handshakes (or fist bumps, depending on the vibe). Long live the power of face-to-face connections!
There you have it—our no-fluff, sarcasm-infused take on the future of the event industry. Maybe we’ll be wrong about a few things, but hey, at least we didn’t promise that robots would plan your next offsite (unless you really, really want them to). Here’s to an unpredictable, exciting, and slightly more sustainable year ahead. Cheers!
